Mary Ann Hunter age 88 of Springer passed away Monday October 28, 2019 in Raton.
She was born December 29, 1930 in Springer, NM, the daughter of Margarito and Rosa Fernandez-Montoya. Mary Ann attended the Taylor Springs School, Springer High School and Highlands University where she received her teaching degree. She was a barrel racer and the second Colfax County Fair Queen. In 1958 she married Arvil Bert Hunter, Mary Ann taught school at the Cobre High School in Bayard, NM for three and a half years, then moved home to Springer, NM, then in 1962 they bought the farm in Miami. She taught 3 generations of students at Springer High School in Springer, NM
for thirty and a half years, She taught Home Economics and Physical Ed, was a Future Homemakers of America sponsor and took the leaders to Seattle, WA for the Nationals.
Mary Ann was a coach for the Cheerleaders, Girls Volleyball and basketball for Jr High and High School, girls track, & drove athletics bus for girls sports. She was the class sponsor of Class of 1984 from 1980-1984. Mary Ann retired in 1986, she served two terms as Colfax County Commissioner, she was a rancher and farmer in Miami, NM,
and loved raising and was an avid breeder of Thoroughbred & Quarter Horses, and loved country dancing.
In the last 6 years at Raton Nursing and Rehab, Mary Ann made
many friends, they may not have liked her at first, but grew to love her once she had them trained.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Saturday November 23, 2019 at 10:00 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Springer recited by Deacon Ed Olona, Mass of the resurrection will follow at 10:30 with Father Daniel Balizan as the celebrant.
Mary Ann is survived by her 2 sons, Bob & Jim Hunter, and sister Mary Ellen Redman& brother in law Dr. Michael Redman of Espanola, NM, with numerous nieces & nephews.
A private burial will take place at a later time in the Miami Cemetary.
Arrangements and celebration of love for Mary Ann Hunter are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home of Raton.
